Watering without the guesswork

Watering without the guesswork

More houseplants die of kindness than of neglect. Watering on a fixed schedule — 'every Sunday, whatever the weather' — is how roots drown in winter. Here is how the growers do it instead.

The finger test

Push a finger into the soil to the first knuckle. Dry? Water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage hole, then empty the saucer. Damp? Walk away. This ten-second test beats any app.

The lift test

A freshly watered pot is heavy; a dry one is noticeably light. Lift your pots for a week and your hands will learn to read them faster than your eyes can.

The two classic mistakes

Little and often. Sips of water keep the surface wet and the roots dry, and invite fungus gnats. Water deeply, then let the plant drink. And the cache-pot puddle: a decorative pot without drainage becomes a swamp. Always empty standing water after half an hour.

Thirsty plants tell you — Peace Lilies droop, Pothos leaves soften. Drowning plants just quietly rot. When in doubt, wait a day.
